Bait

This one is about sharks in a mall. Yes, you read it right. Sharks in a mall!

No, they are not in some large aquarium, in fact they are swimming around the entire length and breadth of the mall like any normal shopper. Just hanging around, not really buying anything, like you and I like to do.

Now, you might just laugh at me and this movie and say that there is no way on hell or earth that sharks can swim around in a large mall and eat up humans like snacks without even heading to the mall's food court, or paying through their noses for the refreshments.

Well, that's what I felt when I saw what this movie was about. But trust me, there's a very logical reason why the sharks are having a picnic in the mall.

You see, there's been a tsunami and the sea water has entered the mainland and this mall is right next to the sea and hence most of the mall is underwater and therefore the sharks have as much as right to be there as you and me.

Like the film Snakes On A Plane where you know that there are snakes slithering away in a plane, here we have sharks terrorising the shoppers in a mall.

The story is quite simple - a group of shoppers are caught in a mall during the tsunami. They climb the high shelves and as the water level rises they realise that that there are sharks in the water around them, and they don't have too much time till the water reaches them and they become sharks attack and they become shark snack.

Like in a film of this kind, there are an assortment of characters - the good heroic ones, the ones in distress, the bad, evil guys, the horny youngsters, the old, the young, the macho and the stupid...

This may not seem like a high quality film but it's quite entertaining actually. Because of the super one line concept - sharks in a mall!

I hope they come up with a sequel where they have sharks in the parliament (any country's parliament will do). Well, there actually are sharks in the parliament, but those are human sharks, I wish to see them get trapped and hunted by the sea sharks who like to chomp on a human or two. Now that would be some movie.

Anyway, this is not a movie that will make you a better, wiser, more mature human being. But it may certainly may make you an entertained one. I recommend watching this. Good fun.

Grabbers

ALSO CHECK OUT - How I Murdered Myself

This is the height of absurdity, and quite equally, the height of fun.

Imagine, one fine day a bunch of sea-dwelling, bloodthirsty and truly ugly aliens attack a small town in Ireland. It's the back of beyond, where suddenly these aliens show up raising their slimy, gooey tentacles and start gulping and chewing up people as if they were peanuts that accompany drinks served at your local town bar.

So as people go missing, the survivors start to get scared and wonder how they will survive the night. Because the creatures seem to be everywhere. People are terrified and panicking when they find out that one of them who had been gulped down by the alien was instantly puked out. Why they wonder? And then it hits them, the the person was drunk! They realise that the 'Grabbers' hate drunks more than your neighbourhood traffic cop and your mom combined.

So the solution to the problems, the immunity to the creature, and the key to survival is to get drunk! I love this!

Imagine! The survivors now gather at a bar to hide and everyone starts to drink as if their life depended on it, which it really does!

And as the creature hunts them down, the people of the town start a party in the bar getting drunk like many a skunk.

This is a thriller, it's well made, well acted, the creature is yucky and dangerous with tentacles and all, some of the scenes are suspenseful and scary, the characters are well etched and likeable, and yet at the end of the day this is a really funny movie. It is so different in idea, hence the story and the script are quite novel, quite quirky.

The drink-to-survive idea is so unique, that you have to see it to believe it. What an idea! I personally drink-to-survive every evening but never thought of making it into a film, somebody did and did it well!

Imagine the climax, where a group of piss-ass drunk people try to take on the creature which is sober as a nun and has only had warm blood to drink! Can you guess who wins?

The ending doesn't let you down, it gives you a high and is thrilling, scary yet hilarious. No hangovers here!

And the name of the creature! Grabbers! Imagine that, By that logic a dog should be called Biters, a python Swallowers, a mouse Scurriers, and so on and so forth. The name could have only been given by a perpetually drunk, or an imaginative scriptwriter whether drunk or not.

So if you're in the mood for some simple fun, this is your lucky day as the entire movie is there on youtube. Grab a drink and enjoy!

Pressure

This is an unknown film with not such good reviews from audiences and critics alike. But I watched it because I like locked room stories/mysteries, and the fact that it was set hundreds of feet under water, where the pressure is tremendous and oxygen only what you find in your deep sea diving suit and the submarine pod, made it a must watch for me.

This is a locked room suspense, submarine movie. Unless the characters behave stupidly and start killing each other, I don’t think anything can go wrong with such a story.

And I was right. Right from the get go, this took me with the deep sea divers down under water, and kept me there.

In a way I was stuck with them, trapped with them, and wanted to see what will happen next.

The basic plot is four deep sea diver are sent in a small pod to fix an oil pipeline on the sea bed. It’s a high risk job as a storm is brewing in the skies. Soon they find themselves trapped underwater and retreat into the small submarine/pod which has only so much oxygen for them. So as the characters are trapped they understand, the lesser the number of characters alive, the more the oxygen for them.

So if the other trapped character was to die in an accident they would be able to live longer! But what happened next wasn't what I was expecting. It's certainly not about characters killing each other. Instead the second half of the movie is thrilling and emotional as we begin to root for the characters and want them to come out of this dire situation alive!

It may not be a big blockbuster, it may not have A list actors, it may not be factually correct about deep sea diving, but it is certainly a good story, with an edge of the seat climax! Rarely does a film take you away from your comfortable chair, and comfortable life and transport you into a different, dangerous, unknown, unseen world. This is one of them. In spite of the flaws, this is a must watch for the setting, suspense and the story.

I would like to pressurize you, do watch it if you can.
